Electrical thrust reverser actuation system (ETRAS®), a world first

The development of the electrical thrust reverser actuation system, or ETRAS®, used to open and close the thrust reversers on the A380, started in 2002 and is a world first. Now in service, this system has logged more than 310,000 hours in flight.

All A380s in service are equipped with the ETRAS® electrical thrust reverser actuation system produced by Aircelle, a fellow Safran group company. Two ETRAS® units are installed on each A380, one on each of the aircraft’s two inboard engines.

ETRAS® offers a number of advantages, including reduced weight and maintenance costs, and enhanced reliability and safety. In fact, ETRAS® eliminates a number of hydraulic and pneumatic components and lines, replacing them with lighter electrical equipment.

The electrical system was developed jointly by Hispano-Suiza and Honeywell. Hispano-Suiza produces the electrical and power electronics equipment (ETRAC, TRPU, PDU and harness), while Honeywell supplies mechanical components, including the linear actuators, flexshafts and engine brake.
