Helicopters: Advanced technologies for modern rotorcraft

Hispano-Suiza has developed leading-edge technologies for mechanical power transmissions, enabling us to extend our range of expertise and develop solutions for helicopters.

For example, we designed, developed and produced the speed reduction gearbox for the CTS 800 engine powering the AgustaWestland Super Lynx helicopter, on behalf of LHTEC, a joint venture between Rolls-Royce and Honeywell. By the end of 2009, we had delivered 125 units. (mettre à jour)

For Eurocopter, we developed and produce the two accessory gearboxes for the main gearbox on the EC175 helicopter. This is a new civil helicopter in the 6 to 7-ton class, a 50/50 joint venture of Eurocopter and AVIC II of China. The EC175 made its first flight in December 2009, and deliveries should start in 2012.

Designing effective power transmissions for helicopters depends on proven expertise in highly-loaded, high-speed geartrains. As part of our R&D work with Eurocopter, we have developed a prototype of the main module in a main gearbox for a 5 to 6-ton class helicopter.

Producing this prototype demanded the development of cutting-edge technologies, including:
- the complex topography required for spiro-conical gears;
- bearing races integrated in the gears;
- machining of magnesium housings.
