Hispano-Suiza delivers first Trent XWB power transmissions to Rolls-Royce

Farnborough, July 19, 2010 – Hispano-Suiza today announced the first deliveries of power transmissions for the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engine. Selected by the British engine-maker back in July 2008, Hispano-Suiza delivered the first development shipset in May 2010, to be used for the first engine ground tests in Derby.

“This major milestone is the culmination of remarkable work by our people,” said Olivier Horaist, Chairman and CEO of Hispano-Suiza, “and also reflects the quality of our long-term partnership with Rolls-Royce.”

Hispano-Suiza has in fact teamed up with Rolls-Royce for more than 20 years on the Trent family of large turbofan engines, including the Trent 500 for the A340-500/600, the Trent 700 for the A330 and the Trent 800 for the Boeing 777, as well as the BR700 series of engines for regional and business jets. Hispano-Suiza's latest success in this market is its selection as supplier of the accessory gearbox for the BR725 engine on the Gulfstream G650.

The high-tech power transmission system for the Trent XWB engine is entirely designed, developed and produced by Hispano-Suiza. It comprises the main accessory gearbox and transfer gearbox, angle driveshaft, oil tank and the high-pressure and radial driveshaft bevel gears. Developing 800 kW of power and weighing just 100 kg (twice the power developed by the Trent 700 system at equivalent weight), this system is designed to maximize engine performance.

Hispano-Suiza supplies an installed base of more than 4,000 engines in the Rolls-Royce Trent and BR700 families.

Hispano-Suiza at Farnborough Airshow

Hispano-Suiza is participating at the Farnborough International Airshow from July 19th to July 25th.
At this occasion, Hispano-Suiza will display on the Safran Group booth (Hall4, B12):

the power transmission of the Trent 700 Rolls-Royce's engine,

the electrical brake actuation controller (EBAC) for the Boeing 787's electric brakes developed by Messier-Bugatti.

Alain Berger named Vice President Marketing, Sales, Support & Services at Hispano-Suiza

Alain Berger was named Vice President Marketing, Sales, Support & Services at Hispano-Suiza (Safran group) on June 1. He replaces Jamil Dirani, who has moved to Messier-Dowty.

Alain Berger, 44, graduated from the Polytech engineering school at the University of Clermont-Ferrand, with a major in electrical engineering. He started his career in 1991 as sales-engineer with LMB, now a subsidiary of Honeywell Aerospace. In 1995 he was named Vice President, Sales & Marketing at this company, subsequently being named Deputy Director in 1998. He joined the Safran group in 2000 as Vice President for Sales, Support and Services at Toulouse-based Technofan, where he took an active role in business development and performance enhancement of customer support activities.

Alain Berger joined Hispano-Suiza in September 2007 as head of the sales department. He contributed to the company's selection by Rolls-Royce in 2008 for the power transmission system on the Trent XWB engine for the Airbus A350 XWB, as well as business development for new electrical products within the scope of the Safran Power division, created in 2009.

Focus on Hispano-Suiza's role in Clean Sky

On May 4, Hispano-Suiza welcomed to the Safran Museum in Villaroche (near Paris), about fifty members of the research program Clean Sky, a European Joint Technology Initiative (JTI)*. They were all there for the annual progress review on one of the key areas of research in this program, “Systems for Green Operations”, which key objective is to optimize the use of energy in aircraft systems. One of the main topics on this subject is the growing electrification of aircraft systems.

Hispano-Suiza is participating in five of the six main research platforms (Integrated Technology Demonstrators, ITDs) covered by Clean Sky, a European program that aims to significantly reduce the environmental impact of air transport.

In the Systems for Green Operations platform, Hispano-Suiza is teaming up with fellow Safran companies Aircelle and Techspace Aero to coordinate research on the electrification of nacelle systems. At the same time, through the Sustainable and Green Engines platform, Hispano-Suiza is developing electrical technologies for an Open Rotor type engine, a concept that is being developed by Snecma, also a Safran group company.

To meet the ambitious objectives set by Clean Sky, Hispano-Suiza is providing access to its facilities and expertise in the integration and characterization of “more electric” equipment. For example, the Copper Bird® test rig will be adapted to meet the requirements of fixed and rotary-wing aircraft manufacturers (Dassault Aviation, Alenia Aeronautica, Eurocopter, AgustaWestland), in order to become the “electrical test rig” demonstrator for business aircraft, regional aircraft and helicopters.

Thanks to the validation of new electrical architectures on this test rig, Hispano-Suiza is playing a major role in three other platforms, eco-design, green regional aircraft and green rotorcraft, along with the two mentioned earlier. Integration of equipment on the Copper Bird test rig is slated for the end of 2011.

Hispano-Suiza wins two Innovation awards in Safran group competition

On April 27, the Safran group held the awards ceremony for its Participative Innovation Competition, in honor of the most innovative projects submitted by employees of Group companies in 2009. Safran places top priority on employee initiative, for instance by encouraging and recognizing innovation through this annual Innovation Competition, open to all employees.

Hispano-Suiza stood out from the crowd this year, by winning two of the five awards.

Lean-Sigma Innovation award, for the company's project "Drastic improvement in the reliability of a strategic Group supplier". This award recognized a collaborative improvement initiative by a Hispano-Suiza team along with its supplier of precision mechanical parts, Vignal Artru Industries. The initiative will provide methodological support to all suppliers, enabling them to improve quality, on-time delivery and costs.

Patented Innovation award for the project "Optimized power generation for e-nacelle functions", awarded jointly to Hispano-Suiza and fellow Group company Aircelle for their work on the electrical architecture of nacelle functions for the new LEAP-X engine. The teams filed for three patents on this subject in 2009.

Three other awards were handed out during the ceremony:
Safran Grand Prize to Sagem Sécurité for its “Finger on the Fly” technology.
Special Participative Innovation award to Snecma.
Sustainable Development Innovation award to Messier-Dowty.
